Launceston Holidays Guide
Tasmania, Australia
Launceston in Tasmania's northern region is a beautiful, historic city established in 1806 by free settlers, (unlike Hobart which was originally a convict settlement). Its steep streets lined with 19h century houses will remind you of San Francisco, albeit on a much smaller scale. Explore the elegant sandstone architecture and enjoy dining on the sumptuous fresh local produce for which the area is famous.

Launceston's most visited attraction is Cataract Gorge, a natural wonder only 15 minutes walk from the city centre. The combination of the rugged waterfalls and Victorian-era gardens make you feel as if you've stepped back in time – you can almost see elegant ladies in long white dresses carrying parasols and enjoying picnics. Launceston's river-front areas have been revitalised and Launceston Seaport is a lovely place for lunch or dinner. There is a board-walk linking Seaport to the suburb of Inveresk, home to the Queen Victoria Museum, one of Australia's best regional galleries.
Outside Launceston there are a number of natural attractions to explore. The Tamar River valley is a beautiful place of forested hills, vineyards, farms and orchards. In January the lavender fields are ablaze in purple, and around every corner you will find boutique wineries, idyllic villages and even roadside stalls offering fresh produce (some with only an honesty box for payment, just like in the old days). You can explore via self-drive, coach tour or cruise on the Tamar River.
South of Launceston you will find the historic villages and grand country manors of Evansdale and Longsford, while adventure seekers can glide through the majestic tree-tops on flying fox wires at Hollybank Adventure Centre.
Launceston has a cool temperate climate, with spring, summer and autumn being ideal times to visit. Blooming Tasmania is a collection of floral shows, festivals and garden open days held throughout Tasmania between September and May.
