The Fleurieu Peninsula, just an hour drive south of Adelaide CBD, is home to the McLaren Vale vineyards and a handful of quaint small beach towns with small beach-front restaurants serving magnificent regional produce (May to October is lobster season!) and inland historical villages with tea-houses. The largest town is Victor Harbour, a popular beach destination for locals and gateway to the Murry River estuary and the Coorong National Park which teams with bird-life and also a fisherman's paradise. Most day tours of the region depart from Adelaide.

Some of the best wine regions in South Australia are found in the Mclaren Vale where its 60 cellar doors produce a variety of wonderful Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons. One of the best known wineries is D'Arenberg's, located atop a hill in a historic 19th homestead. The red wine grapes here are pressed using traditional foot treading which brings the mouth-watering flavours of the wine to the forefront. The restaurant on site, d'Arry's Verandah, serves delicious lunches. Chapel Hill winery is set within an old stone church and has panoramic views over the Onkaparinga National Park.
The peninsula offers beautiful rural countryside with roads lined by ancient gum trees and thoroughly enjoyable for exploring by car. Inland, you'll come across a dozen or so small historical towns with tea house, bakeries and boutique gift shops with Strathalbyn and Asbourne particularly charming. The west coast has some lovely beaches, with Sellicks Beach and Aldinga Beach being the pick. There are spectacular cliffs at Port Noarlunga, a good wreck dive site at Port Willunga and Heritage-listed sand dunes at Normanville which has a great camp site.
On the south coast of the peninsula is Victor Harbour, the main town of the region and something of a beach playground for locals and tourists alike. It's a great place to take a surfing lesson, or load up the picnic basket with gourmet delights and enjoy a picnic on the beach or in one of the conservation parks in the area. There's an excellent 24km coastal bike-way from here to Goolwa and you can rent bikes from either town. Goolwa is on the mighty Murray River estuary and is a good place to rent a houseboat for a few days or take a relaxing day cruise into the estuary.
