The Coorong National Park is a unique coastal habitat important to the local Aboriginal people. Over 80 species of birds call this area home including rare migratory birds that travel from as far as Africa to winter in the area. The Coorong is lined with an unbroken 100-km long beach backed by sandunes which is a fisherman's paradise – the coast is best explored with a 4WD vehicle.
The small town of Robe is a popular holiday spot and has lots of caravan parks – its a good place for families with a safe swimming beach and decent surfing for beginners. The region is also has six wine areas, the best known of which is the Coonawarra.
Mt Gambier is the largest town on the coast and being almost on the border with Victoria it makes for a convenient stopover being almost midway between Adelaide and Melbourne. The town has some good museums but its main attraction are the three crater lakes in the Kanawinka Geopark area including Blue Lake which famously turns colour. Another highlight of this rich geological landscape is Naracoorte Caves, 60-km inland and with ancient fossil deposits from the age of the dinosaurs plus several fascinating chamber caves to explore as well as adventure caving tours for the less claustrophobic.
