Mission Beach, two hours south of Cairns, is the tropical destination of your dreams; a place where lush green rainforest meets white sandy beaches. Spectacular Dunk Island, which was named Australasia's Leading Family Resort in the 2010 World Travel Awards is only 38km from the coast. Sadly, Dunk Island was badly damaged during Cyclone Yasi in the summer of 2011. But don't let that stop you visiting the area. Mission Beach actually consists of four small villages strung together along a 14km stretch of palm-lined coast. Activities included sea-kayaking, snorkelling, sky-diving, and rainforest walks. Thrill seekers can experience the extreme adventure of riding the rapids on the nearby Tully River.
The experienced Aboriginal guides at Eco Creek will take you on a cultural journey of the awe-inspiring rainforest, along tranquil waterholes and crystal clear creeks. You may even spot one of the rare Cassowaries, an emu-like bird with bright blue neck plumage and a distinctive crest.
The tropical climate in Mission Beach means warm, wet summers from Dec – April, with the rest of the year bringing dry, warm days and cool nights. In May the butterflies known as "Big Blue Ulysses and Giant Green Birdwing" hatch, providing a magnificent spectacle for nature-loving visitors.
