Africa

african accommodation guide

Zambia is a poor country, but stable – tourism is one of the major hopes for economic growth. It’s also the best place in Africa to see the spectacular Victoria Falls, and one of the best, least crowded and most authentic African countries to go on safari. While the animals are the major draw, you should also spend some time in Zambia’s cities, to enjoy the chilled out African vibe and possibly trying some of the local Zambian beer, either bottled or, if you’re after a true African experience, Chibuku. If you’re there at the right time, be sure to check out Zambia’s traditional festivals.

What to Do in Zambia Africa

Zambia is one of Africa's most magical countries, and you will remember it for the rest of your life. The biggest destination in Zambia is Victoria Falls, or Mosi Oa Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders. ‘Discovered’ in 1855 by Livingstone, Vic Falls is one of the continent’s most spectacular sights. Around the Falls, you can try white-water rafting, bungee jumping, take a helicopter ride, view game or, rather less excitingly, have a round of golf. But there’s more to Zambia than the Falls – try visiting the National Parks.

Zambia Holidays Guide

South Luangwa is one of the best game reserves in the world, and is less touristy than parks in Kenya or South Africa, but with excellent facilities including night safaris, guided walking safaris and even a massage service!

Lusaka is the capital, and has a handful of sights and Zambia’s busiest nightlife. If you’re coming overland by public transport, then there’s a train from Dar es Salaam, and a ferry across Lake Tanganyika.

Sadly, political instability in Zimbabwe means that the classic Vic Falls to Cape Town rail journey is not an option at the time of writing, but check the situation before you plan to travel. Kabwe, formerly known as Broken Hill, isn’t a tourist city, but is a good place to find out more about life in Zambia, and you can also hike into the hills.
