Tanzania and Kenya are both famous for their game reserves – which include big names like the Ngorogoro Crater and the Masai Mara. If you've ever watched a wildlife documentary and hankered after early morning game rides to view big cats, then this is the place to come. Facilities are very well developed in the main reserves, and you can try bush walks, balloon safaris and numerous other activities. Both Kenya and Tanzania also have beach destinations too. Mombasa is the centre for Kenyan seaside holidays. Tanzania's most famous seaside destination is the fantastic island of Zanzibar, where you can visit Stone Town and enjoy some amazing beaches – there are numerous other islands too, many of them reachable by dhow from Dar es Salaam.

East Africa Holiday Guide

If you're looking for a beach holiday, then you'll find plenty of other options in East Africa. Mauritius attracts a wide range of holidaymakers, and is a good destination for families – it's also popular with people who want to try water sports. The Seychelles are firmly aimed at the luxury end of the market, and are perfect for a once-in-a-lifetime holiday like a honeymoon, or for yachting holidays. Mozambique is fast becoming popular as a beach holiday destination – the sands and seas are pristine, and you can also visit the historial Ilha des Mozambique.

Ethiopia is perhaps an unusual holiday venue, but it's a low cost alternative to some of the more established destinations. The national parks are less developed, but the game rivals anything to be seen in the countries further south. Ethiopia has a distinctive cuisine too, featuring dishes like doro wat, a type of stew, mopped up with injera, a flatbread. Another surprise is that Ethiopia has some fantastic medieval castles and churches, that are unique amongst anything else found in Africa.
