The Seychelles would be perfect as a honeymoon destination. These beautiful islands have a number of exclusive lodges – guest numbers are limited and you’ll enjoy perfect, white beaches and clear waters in relative peace. Some lodges also have spa facilities, so you can enjoy a massage as you gaze at the crystalline seas. Lodges generally have excellent food, and you’ll come back relaxes and energised. You can also see the Seychelles on a cruise, or even from a luxury yacht.
Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, is a beautiful and atmospheric place for a romantic break. The has long been associated with the spice trade – to the extent that its nickname is the Spice Island. Stone Town was the commercial centre of this, and you can walk the narrow alleyways as merchants have done for centuries. This is also a great place to eat out, with excellent local fruit and seafood. Take a trip in a dhow, visit the Butterfly Centre, and enjoy a guided tour round modern-day spice plantations. Zanzibar itself has some great beaches, and you can also travel to other islands in the archipelago, including Pemba Islands, to enjoy the pristine sands and cooling waters. You and your partner will never forget your trip here.
Mozambique is fast growing as a tourist destination. There are luxury lodges and amazing beaches, as well as game viewing opportunities. However, the most romantic destination is Ilha des Mozambique, the former colonial capital. This medieval Portuguese town has a fortress and a church, which are some of the oldest structures in Southern Africa. The Portuguese legacy means that you won’t have to look hard to find great food – the peri-peri chicken is excellent.
Morocco, with its mountains, historical souks and medinas, and cool coastline, is a romantic destination with a difference. Visit Casablanca, one of the most chic cities in Africa, to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife. You can even go to Rick’s Café and quote cheesy lines from the film to each other (although this might harm rather than help your chances of a successful romance!). Rabat is much more lively – wander the Casbah and linger over a pot of mint tea, before impressing your beloved with your haggling skills in the souk. Agadir is the best place to head for beaches.
