Sumatra Accommodation & Holidays Guide

Indonesia, Southeast Asia

sumatra holiday and accomodation guide

Sumatra and Kalimantan are the wildest and most remote regions of Indonesia. Both are perfect for trekking in the jungle, sailing around remote coves, diving in pristine waters and seeing unique and endangered animals. Sumatra is the Indonesian district of the island of Borneo, one of the remotest places on the planet and home of the orang-utan. If you're very lucky you may also see Sumatran rhinos and tigers. This is a fantastic destination to come to walk the peaks and see the lakes, and is also Indonesia's top spot for surfing. Kalimantan is even more sparsely inhabited. Come here to dive, to see temples, and to venture into the steamy jungles.

Sumatra Holidays Planner

There is no one obvious base to use to see Sumatra. Bandar Lampung is the easiest place to travel from Jakarta, and is a great place to stay if you want to visit the site of Krakatoa. You can camp overnight near the volcano to see the eruptions; the glowing lava is best witnessed by moonlight. In Kalimantan, the east of the region is one of the best areas for diving, as you can plunge into the clear waters either from one of the islands or the mainland. This is also a good area to see orang-utans at Kutai National Park, and you can take a houseboat into the hinterland to visit some of the tribes that inhabit the highlands.
