Zhejiang Province and Jiansu Province, in the east of China, are some of the most popular regions in the country for tourists. They have thriving cities, including two former capitals of China, Nanjing and Hangzhou, has part of two of the country’s greatest waterways, the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal, and much else besides. Although the region has suffered from the Japanese invasion in the nineteen-thirties and forties, and economic reform between the fifties and seventies, this area of China is one that’s currently going from strength to strength, both economically and culturally. Whether you’re interested in Chinese history or want to enjoy some fantastic city breaks, you won’t be bored.

The main attractions of this region of China are its cities. Hangzhou has an amazing backdrop, and its West Lake is one of the most scenic and serene in this vast country. You can see Impression West Lake, a play that’s performed every night, take a boat ride on the lake to visit some of its islands, and see the willow trees, temples, pagodas and ornamental gardens that litter this beautiful area. Nanjing has the enormous Confucious Temple, and the Gate of China, the best-preserved section of the ancient city walls. However, many visitors come here to see the spectacular tombs.

Suzhou is another famous tourist destination. Its noted for its gardens, many of which are laid out according to classical Chinese design diktats – you can visit the Garden of the Humble Administrator, the Garden of the Master of the Nets, the Garden of Retreat and Reflection and many, many more. Don’t underestimate the time you’ll want to spend in these incredible spaces.

Ningbo has relatively few historical sights – compared to other cities in the area, at least – but is a great place to go if you don’t want to do sightseeing but just want to have fun. Chill out on the beaches, visit the zoo and the aquarium, soak in the hot springs and bargain hard in the markets.
