Somerset Holidays Guide
England, Europe
Bristol is the most vibrant city in the West Country of England. Bordering the county of Somerset on one side, and sharing the Bristol Channel with South Wales on the other. Bristol can offer city life without having to go far to find glorious countryside and stunning sea views. Around 120 miles from the capital, Bristol is England's sixth largest city, boasting its own cathedral, historic buildings, galleries and museums. To get a feel for the city enjoy a guided tour from one of the open-top sight-seeing buses that run throughout the day. Evening time is when the city truly comes alive; heaving with great restaurants, sophisticated bars and night clubs that draw people in from all over.

Just 20 miles south, and over the county border into Somerset is another great city, Bath. Home to the iconic Royal Crescent building, a magnificent landmark. A must do in the city is the ancient Roman Baths. A remarkable temple built by the Romans, housing the country's only hot spring and offering unique spa treatments. For the book enthusiast a visit to the Jane Austin Centre tells the story of the famous writer and resident during the Regency period. During the evening you will be spoilt for choice, with bars, theatres, eateries and of course the traditional British pub all on offer.
Stonehenge is probably the most famous landmark in the world. This prehistoric monument dominates the scenery at its location on the Salisbury Plains, Wiltshire. A world heritage site, Stonehenge was reportedly built around 2500bc during the Bronze Age. You can take a guided tour to see the stones from Bath and other cities. However, Stonehenge is easily accessible by road; in fact you can see it from the roadside. So you may want to hire a car and take as much time as you like. There are special events held at certain times of the year, many of them century old, ritual ceremonies. Like the summer Solstice celebration, held in June, thousands of people gather at the break of dawn to welcome the longest day of the year.
When looking for somewhere to stay campsites are well located for Stonehenge. In the surrounding cities luxury hotels and apartments are on offer to suit any budget.
