Taupo Holidays Planner

The town of Taupo is the vibrant heart of the Lake Taupo region. The compact town of just 25,000 residents is an ideal base for fishing, walking and skiing excursions and is a destination in itself, with great boutique shopping and fine dining experiences.

The lake was formed from an extinct volcanic crater and you can see evidence of its fiery birth at the 'Craters of the Moon' geothermal region with its boiling mud pools, steaming craters and geysers. Lake Taupo is one of the world's largest natural trout fisheries and visitors from around the globe flock to try their luck in the crystal clear streams and lakes. Many tour companies offer fishing tours, with tours for complete beginners to seasoned experts.

The thundering Huka Falls are one of the most visited attractions in New Zealand. The falls are formed by the abrupt narrowing of the Waikato River, and the volume of pure water flowing over the volcanic rock face is often enough to fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools - per second. From the many viewing platforms you can get up close to this breathtaking wonder, and there are walking and bike trails all along its length, which continue up and down the Waitako River.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing (or Tongariro Crossing) has been rated as one of the best one-day treks in New Zealand. It passes through high volcanic mountain passes, and sparkling crater lakes. You can attempt the 18km walk on your own or travel with an experienced guide. In winter, the nearby ski-fields of Mt Ruapehu are well worth visiting.
